On Talib Kweli's new album Ear Drum, he's given up what little people-pleasing tendencies he had and has started making music for himself, focusing on originality and meaning. In "Stay Around," Talib jokes about his prior situation trying to please the Geffen label: "Kweli, you should rap about this, you should rap about that, any more suggestions? Yeah, you in the back." Since then he's created Blacksmith Records, aiming to demolish the world's appreciation of watered-down and sales-driven music.
The album shines with consistent craftsmanship. Each track digs deep into your eardrum to keep resonating long after the music has stopped. Ceaseless conscious rap accompanied by crazy beats leave Ear Drum more like a testament to authentic creative music than a chart-topping album. Luckily for Talib, it's going to top charts and show the world what hip hop albums should sound like.
