Head down Colfax this Friday night-mewithoutYou is bringing their unique show to the Fillmore in support of fellow rockers Thrice and Brand New.
Enigmatic and socially-aware singer/songwriter Aaron Weiss packs more thought into a single song than most of us put into entire essays. Using both Islamic and Christian traditions as inspiration (think Rumi and St. Francis), Weiss delivers lyrics that crisscross the religious/secular boundary effortlessly. For each show, he abandons any sense of self-consciousness he normally has and embodies a whirling dervish on speed. Just as the song ("Paper Hanger") says: "If they ask you for the sign of the Father in you, tell them it's movement, movement, movement!"
Leave all sense of self-awareness at the door, unless you have a date: you'll want to release your inner whirling dervish as well while listening to their vivacious melodies. If only we could all be as carefree as Weiss. Just don't be surprised if he walks onstage wearing (and eating) something that looks like it's just been taken from the bottom of a dumpster. It probably has. That's just one of the joys of seeing a band whose members take its message of human and social redemption seriously.
It's been over a year since the release of their latest album, Brother, Sister, so their most recent songs aren't exactly new anymore. Expect the gems from that album to be mixed in with older favorites like "January 1979." Thrice will follow, rocking songs from their Downy-fresh album The Alchemy Index: Volumes. I & II: Fire & Water. Brand New will close the show with their lyrically-driven catalog of songs that drive young women wild.
Be sure to show up early for your brush with humble genius-mewithoutYou traditionally eats and hangs out with fans in front of the venue before each show. If desired, bring a vegetarian meal to share, and give the guys a break from the dumpsters.
Brand New, Thrice, and mewithoutYou will play the Fillmore this Friday night. The 16+ show costs $28 and starts at 7 p.m.
