Under the Radar: Festival Survival: The Onion's Rock' n' Roll Movie Nights Commence

Rock' n' roll and movies: a hit and miss combo. From fabulous cinematic masterpieces (Almost Famous) to atrocious flops (Rock Star)-the spirit of rock music can be either glamorized or tarnished in its transfer to the big screen. No one knows this better than the weekly satirical newspaper The Onion-famous for its witty headlines and righteous music features.

The Onion's A.V. Club will be hosting a monthly movie night at the Hi-Dive featuring badass "rock flicks" hand picked by Denver's favorite local bands. Starting this Wednesday, local hipsters, music snobs, and film geeks will unite on South Broadway in pursuit of popcorn, cocktails, and the most rockin' of films.

Summertime confirmed that Denver's thirsty for an event like this with Film on the Rocks, a weekly show featuring opening bands and several classic flicks displayed on a tremendous screen. Though the weather will cool and city folk will no longer want to make their way to Morrison and hike their way to the Rocks, the desire for a social gathering remains.

The Hi-Dive, a happenin' favorite of young people across Denver, serves as the ideal place for a rock-flick night to occur. The typical rock club usually contains a mix of local cool kids-the type you don't want to witness your wearing of sweats or any other standard movie-watching clothes. But Wednesday may be safe, as most hipsters use that night to revamp for weekends of musical snobbery. So come as you are: No one wants to watch a rock' n' roll movie in stiletto boots or mini skirts.

Films like the aforementioned masterpieces Almost Famous, That Thing You Do!, Spinal Tap, and School of Rock are likely among the candidates for the rock flicks featured throughout the year. An optimal place to bring friends, family, or a new hot date, The A.V. Club will become a hip monthly event as it encompasses our favorite forms of entertainment.
