Denver's "sex positive" shop Hysteria, owned by Elizabeth Hauptman, is unlike most adult shops you may have encountered before. The naturally illuminated and inviting ambiance of the female-friendly store makes you feel more like you are in a Cherry Creek boutique. Unlike typically dirty and often awkward sex shop that can make you feel like you have to wash your hands as soon as you leave the store.
The shop was designed for women, and the comforting aesthetic reflects Hauptman's inviting personality. She has a background in holistic healing arts and female sexual health, and specializes in a technique called Mayan Uterine Massage. Hauptman explains, "It's a form of massage that I teach the women to do that can be beneficial with concerns like cramps, trouble getting pregnant, and menopause."
One of the reasons Hauptman decided to open this type of store was the result of her experience in uterine massage. Many of her clients would be notably surprised whenever Hauptman would ask questions about their sex lives. It was shocking to her how many women did not immediately connect their sexuality with their reproductive health and were uncomfortable even talking about sex, let alone yearning to shop for adult products in a public place.
In an attempt to help such women explore their sexuality, Hauptman and her husband Pete Yribia opened Hysteria in 2005.
According to Hauptman, Hysteria is the only sex shop in Colorado that specifically caters to people's health by offering only top grade non-toxic toys. Many sex toys have a relatively high level of toxicity, and the often porous material can easily trap and carry harmful bacteria. One of the primary aims of the business is to educate people about the dangers of toys that have been known to cause cancer and disrupt hormones.
The main level displays a wide variety of toys, all of which are non-toxic and displayed out of the box. You can pick everything up, see how it works, and read informational material about the product so that there are no surprise when you get home and realize you weren't getting what you expected.
Many of the toys are made with medical grade silicone, the "queen" of sex toy materials. Some of the best selling toys are made by a Swedish company called LELO; everything they sell is made with body safe material and comes with a one-year warranty, which is pretty much unheard of.
The LELO vibrators are rechargeable, so there is no need for batteries. Hauptman also recommends a product called the Rocker Chick, which is considered the first hands-free vibrator designed by a woman.
Every month Hysteria holds two to four classes, including a women's only group that regularly meets to talk about sex and enjoy each other's company in a fun and cozy environment. Hysteria also offers everything from kissing workshops to beginning BDSM rope play. The shop also hosts parties after hours. You simply pick a night and invite 10 to 30 friends, with Hauptman supplying food and drink for the event. The parties can make the experience of shopping for pornography, toys, or even seeking sexual advice much easier since you're among friends.
You can make an appointment to talk about sexual issues in Hauptman's private office, where she also continues to practice Mayan Uterine Massage. Visit Hysteria's website for a free vibrator coupon with a $20 purchase.
