Thanksgiving weekend was pretty peaceful in Boulder, except for a few fans in Folsom Field during University of Colorado's football game against neighboring rival University of Nebraska on Friday, according to officials.
Security in Folsom Field during the football game on Friday had to deal with rowdy fans throwing flying objects, but the Boulder Police Department said the city saw few incidents associated with the game.
"There were no real problems related to the game," said Julie Brooks, the public information officer of the BPD. "Overall, a fairly routine weekend ... busy, but not much of note."
Brooks continued to say the game day's incidents were "likely routine arrests."
BPD issued two driving-under-the-influence tickets, both on Friday and Saturday, along with several traffic arrests.
The CU Police Department (CUPD) ejected 40 fans from the game on Friday, and 25 of the ejections were related to alcohol, according to Lt. Brad Wiesley of CUPD. As the clock ticked down on the football game, some CU fans started throwing objects on the field. Security asked fans to leave the section or the stadium.
"Fans don't act like imbeciles," Gary Asmussen, a Nebraska fan, wrote to the Colorado Daily. "I go back many years in this rivalry, and this is just another predicable episode of your fan behavior."
CU sports information director David Plati will be reviewing video surveillance tapes - and fans seen throwing things could be prosecuted and face criminal charges.
Interim CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano told the Colorado Daily Saturday that he was "extremely embarrassed by the behavior of a small minority of fans."
"When is the University going to say 'Enough?' Is it going to take someone getting seriously hurt by thrown objects for some serious action to be taken?" asked Asmussen.
