1) Take a wooden nickel

On the verge of its 8th printing, the Copper Nickel will this Friday host a release party and all are invited. Come on down to the Matter Studio (2132 Market St.) for selected readings, cake cutting, and just general, literary mayhem. But wait, there's more: That night will witness the birth of Counterfeit press, the Nickel's new home. Join UCDHSC's own Dr. York and company for this twin gala event and see what you get for a nickel these days.

2) Corny, but a-maize-ing

For as long as the Copper Nickel has been printing, the Denver Botanic Gardens has been hosting the city's most-attended corn maze. That's right, 8.5 acres of winding pathways secreted away in the stalks-all yours for just $8. Go to www.botanicgardens.org for more information, or just roll up on the Gardens and get lost in the weeds.

3) The Bible, Cliff Notes style

Ongoing-the Avenue Theater (417 East 17th Denver Denver) is showing the Bible. In it's entirety. Get the complete word O' God as brought to you by three papal pros who bring irreverent religiosity to the stage. Witness the fall from grace, Noah's arc escapades, and see the crucifix reenacted live-all within 90 miracle minutes. Playing Thursdays through Sundays, this punchy take-off from the world's most read book will be sure to give you new insight into an old mythology.

4) Get batty.

There's nothing I like more than a live bat encounter. Especially when it's in Ahwawa. "Step into the mysterious world of bats and explore their benefits, habitats, and nocturnal strategies," the website says. Hmm....nocturnal strategies. What is that, bat love? Holy holes, Robin, we're gonna take it mono e guano tonight! Come see what bats are all about at the Plains Conservation Center (15151 East Alameda Parkway ) for this, the only showing of our flying mammal friends, this Sept 28. Call (303) 693-3621 for more.

5) Sign and slide

OK. Maybe the hippies on the hill don't have it so bad. Apparently there's a jazz, wine, and chocolate tasting up there in the People's republic of Boulder. And what you think would cost the earth is being given away. Free like. The Peneplain Jazz Duo meets up with Jerry Weiss on piano and Mike Willis on bass to play while you get tanked on vino and your flavorite cocoa magic. Not bad for nuthin'. Friday nights through Oct 26 from 7:30 -9:30 at the Bookcliff Wine Tasting Room (1468 Pearl).
