Ana's (pronounced ah-NEY-iss) Mitchell is a 25-year-old folk singer who is days away from releasing her first semi-major label album The Brightness. Signed to Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe records, Mitchell's folk expertise will shine through on this guitar-plucking, piano-driven album. The Brightness showcases Mitchell's guttural vocal quality and a slew of instruments. The saxophone, cello, banjo and lap steel are only a few of the ingredients used to ensure this album's success in the mainstream. Mitchell provides a refreshing and earnest look into the oblivity of youth and loneliness of being an emerging artist. "Namesake" is the album's most soulful track, with the accompaniment of strategically placed horns and sincere lyrics that disarm its listeners. The album's only downfall is that it shows no range as far as pace and tempo are concerned. Each song is a slow and honest display of Mitchell's burgeoning talent but is limited by remaining inside of her melancholy. "Hobo's Lullaby" is the closest thing to a fast-paced song on the album. The viola and banjo mix together unusually to accompany what is literally a lullaby for the homeless. The Brightness is a confirmation that misery lends itself to deep and heart-wrenchingly good art. Plus, it doesn't hurt to have a heap of uncommon instruments to back up all of that affliction and torment. Ana's Mitchell will haunt listeners with her unique voice and create a soundtrack for their saddest day.
