Apparently, there is a college out there that has hunky gay (and maybe gay) males that are so sexually active even Caligula would blush. Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds confuses and amazes the senses and it fortunately is playing at the Starz! FilmCenter. I'm not sure who will get more pleasure out of this film: gay men, straight women who love gratuitous shots of the male anatomy (the front and the back) or nymphomaniacs in general. One thing is certain, you won't be able to hide your smirk at the endless gay and dick jokes that this movie props itself upon.

The first Eating Out saw a straight man act gay to get a girl. In the sequel, it's the opposite; a gay man acts straight to get another man. As simple as it sounds, the writer actually finds a way to overload the film with ridiculous characters and contrived dialogue. Troy is the center of all the intentions and attention. He's your typical corn-fed, country boy new to the campus (of what school or college I have no clue). He makes friends with Kyle and Tiffani, both of whom want to mount the buff and well-hung newcomer. Kyle recently broke up with his boyfriend, Marc, and sees Troy as the perfect specimen. Tiffani is the straight slut who wants to sample the man-meat that Troy is packing. Troy is very concealed with his sexual preference and alludes to having made whoopee with both men and women. This only excites Kyle and Tiffani, so they predictably make plans to bed Troy. That plan entails Kyle renouncing his queerness and taking Tiffani as his girlfriend. I'm not quite sure why he wouldn't just play up to Troy's sexual indifference since it's obvious that while Troy may be confused, he by no means has an aversion toward gay men. If fact, Kyle's ex, Marc, and Troy have a steamy photo session that leads to mutual oral sex. All of this leads to the obvious conclusion of the lies coming out and everybody kissing and making up - and I mean everybody.

There are some things that work in this film, such as the crass language that's used to describe male and female sex organs, and the mocking tone of anti-gay organizations, but there are many flaws as well. Firstly, the acting is mediocre at best, often times it's unconvincing. For example, the actor portraying Troy does not appear as confused about his sexuality as his character is supposed to be. While he talks about being unsure of which sex he fancies more, it's clear that he doesn't want much to do with the few female characters. All of the male cast members are gay actors, which hinders the film's ability to come off as authentic.

The writing is where the film loses the audience. Beginning with the characters, most of them are inconsistent with their values and beliefs. All of them seem willing to abandon any standards just to have sex with an attractive person. This may look like the real world on the surface, but very few people will fake their sexual orientation just to sleep with a person who may or may not be of the same persuasion. This glaring fact and the cheesy resolution at the end of the film make the story all the less plausible. Granted it is a film that is marketed to the male homosexual community, but with a little better casting and writing it could have appealed to all sexual orientations.

The only thing missing from Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds is the National Lampoon tag that seems to appear on all straight-to-cable college-themed flicks. The title itself doesn't really work with the movie's theme; it is just another one of the film's lame attempts at being clever. I think that whoever sees this movie is going to be asking themselves similar questions that I have, such as: Where is this place that has wall-to-wall hotties and why are they trying to instill morals at the end of the movie?

Some of this film works, but not much. If you like raunchy jokes and good-looking men, then you would like this movie. However, don't expect much other than a chuckle here and there. If we are lucky, this is the last time we'll be Eating Out, but don't be surprised to see Eating Out 3: Ménage a Trios.
