Last year the CU Denver Hockey team made their debut as the first club sport of the school. This year the team is back and hopes to solidify a sense of school spirit the university is seriously lacking in.
Speaking to Gordon Nytes, the CU Denver Ice Hockey Team President, you quickly find out the amount of adversity the first team on campus faces. With $1,200 per player due fees, zero financial support from the school, and not having an ice rink to call their own, the club hopes to establish not only a better team but also a better sense of identity.
“Obviously being a new team it has been a challenge to compete with some of the clubs who have had successful teams for many years, but we are constantly working hard and I am confident we will be right there with them in the near future,” proclaimed Nytes.
As it currently stands, the team still faces a 0-6 loss record this season, and has yet to establish the availability of merchandise at the Auraria Campus Bookstore, though they are currently in the process of doing so.
Their upcoming game on Sunday November 4 at Big Bear Ice Arena against Creighton University at 1pm is expected to attract more students, and hopefully turn their losing streak around.
After an intense opening game against Colorado School of Mines, a crowd of over 100 students displayed an extraordinary amount of support, but with games being free be sure to grab some friends and check out one of the coolest things to happen at the University.
