AROUND TOWN

  • ablair

    A welcome farewell

When I began this column, I wanted to make known the wonderful experiences that anyone could have around this great city of ours.
I wanted to influence people to experience what I thought was worthwhile.

Involve

Trendsetters

  • Most repulsively ironic fashion trend

Shoes serve two distinctive purposes in our culture: practicality and fashion. Although they often converge, these two types of footwear are, in their essences, represented by opposite styles of shoes. This year, however, the two defining women’s styles of each group—the high heel and the tennis shoe—merged together to form something horrendous.

  • 2ndhand

    Best women's second-hand shop

The best second-hand boutique is Act II consignment in Littleton. The greatest thing about the shop: Both trend-seekers and fashion eclectics can find new additions to their wardrobes.

  • TEDx

TED talks, the world and campus listen

Loren Cobb grew up in Pakistan in the aftermath of its bloody war with India, spent 20 years training the U.S. military on U.N. peacekeeping tactics, and visited some of the most unstable countries in the world.

  • urban-gardening

    Sustainable agriculture in the city

Envy the humble crayfish in Greg Cronin’s aquaponics tank. Unlike us messy, polluting humans, these creatures exist in a perfect ecosystem, unwittingly sustaining and growing nearby plants.

  • ks

Creators unite to bring dreams to life

When looking ahead, the future can seem bleak for college students. The economy is diagnosed as wrecked, with jobs nearly impossible to come by. The idea of reaching goals and aspirations seems hopeless, but it doesn’t have to anymore.

What To Do

  • Best joint to get your drunk on

Denver is a city on the rise in terms of nightlife, bars, and boozing. It seems that almost every week a new trendy bar opens up around the city. Sadly, most of these joints cost a pretty penny and prevent those avid drinkers from really getting down and dirty on those post-work Friday nights. Thankfully, Zio Romolo’s Alley Bar on 32nd and Zuni has remained a damn great place to get drunk.

  • Dirtiest dance floor

Beauty Bar’s Denver location is known for one thing above all else—a dirty dance floor.

  • indie

    Best indie movie theater

When searching for the best indie film here in Denver, look no further than the SIE FilmCenter. As the face of the Denver Film Society, this classy theater provides an ever-changing variety of in-dependent film.

  • theater

    Social justice theatrics rock locals

Despite the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ central location and easy accessibility, sometimes its shows can be a bit outside the price range of the average student.

  • pinball

    Plunge into pinball expo, tournament

The Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown and Gameroom Expo celebrates its ten year anniversary on April 26–28 at the Sheraton Denver Tech Center with over 125 pinball and classic arcade games on free play—no quarters needed.

  • AGT

    Annual talent show promises stars

On April 25, the Tivoli Turnhalle will be hosting Auraria’s Got Talent. For three years, the talent show has allowed all the hidden stars of Denver to come forth, grace the audience with their talents, and compete for the chance to win $500.

Imbibe

Food Review

  • shawarma

    Best shawarma

Devour the best shawarma in Denver at Mecca Grill.
The word “shawarma” might evoke scenes from the movie The Avengers, or a tasty Mediterranean-style wrap.

  • Worst campus coffee

Auraria Campus is undeniably lacking in good restaurant options. This year, Metro opened its new student success building and brought with it a couple new choices for food on campus.

  • Best drink on campus

Taisun grass jelly drink looks like something only super health nuts drink, but even the most hardcore soda drinker can find bliss in its sweet, offbeat nectar.

  • eldiablo

Best place that turned to the worst

Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen in Denver, and sometimes it’s hard to find one that is worth eating at. El Diablo, at 101 Broadway in Denver, was one such Mexican restaurant.

  • dp-dough

Get thee grub on at D.P. Dough

Even though there are almost two dozen other locations around the country, eating at D.P. Dough seems more like grubbing down at a hole-in-the-wall that serves cheap, satisfying food after a late night on Colfax.

  • bull-and-bush

Authentic London eats and local ale

There is a pub by the name of Bull & Bush in Hampstead Heath near London, which dates back to 1645. The Glendale pub off of Colorado may not be as antique, but it tastes just as authentic.

  • side-wok

Family restaurant meets the Colfax style

Located in the midst of the kitschy motels and shabby liquor stores of West Colfax, Sidewok Café is the perfect summation of the area’s contradictions.
The Chinese and Thai restaurant is busy but empty. It is the epitome of family-run, but tucked behind a big Las Vegas-style sign on one of Denver’s grittier streets.

The Beat

Art Scene

  • streetartist

From dumpsters and trains to art galleries

Street art is moving from the sides of abandoned buildings to the walls of fine art galleries, and local graffiti artist Gamma Acosta is a prime example of that.

  • gallery

Iranian art merges poetry and color

Abbas Khajeaian introduces Colors Of Spring: Poetic Abstraction with a lyrical maxim: “When love sets you aflame, seek your resurrection in the ashes!” But it’s more than just an aphorism; it’s Khajeaian’s story.

  • opera

Don Giovanni dons a leather jacket

It is difficult to make something that is timeless feel fresh, but that is exactly what Opera Colorado’s most recent staging of Don Giovanni does.
The Mozart opera was taken from its original 18th century setting and placed in the more contemporary time of the late 1950s.

Denver pizzerias: the new versus the old

Four pies enter, but only one leaves

Denver has never been a pizza battleground like New York or Chicago, but the simple food has always been the subject of heated disagreements over technique and ingredients: thin crust versus deep-dish, organic uncured pepperoni versus canned black olives, made to be eaten on the run with a paper plate or delicately with the help of a knife and fork.
