Lots of people want to have a unique style that makes them stand out, but it’s a daunting task. There are a hundred different washes and cuts of jeans. An infinite array of jacket-shirt combinations pollute the realm of possibility. Boots and tennis shoes and loafers overload the mind with options. This begs the question: How do you make yourself stand out? Just how do you decide?
The key is simplicity. Stay basic with these outfit choices, and, instead, make a statement with your accessories.

Save the difficult choices for where it counts most, which applies to both males and females.

A plain pair of canvas sneakers with a fitted pair of jeans and a solid or subtly patterned sweater work perfectly. Once you have this generic canvas, you are ready to construct your fashionable masterpiece.

Socks are sacred things that have gone from warming the feet to functioning as statements in their own right. Pick up a pair of socks from Argoz, a webstore on the cutting edge of this evolution. They provide eclectic argyle patterns, in stark neon and eye-catching pastels. Heck, their slogan is “Unafraid to stand out.”

Similarly, don’t take hours languishing over what shirt or jacket to wear. Dress up something easy with a signature scarf from H&M. You can make your own mark with a variety of patterns and materials, from checkered and cotton to silk and solid, and for just $9.95. You’ll stay warm, distract from the simplicity of your canvas, and show off your personality.

Jewelry, too, is an excellent way to add flare to any ensemble. For the men, a rugged ribbon bracelet from Miansai ($65) will make a statement and add texture to your outfit. Women can utilize simple patterned rings ($5.95) or a chain ($7.95) from Forever 21 to adorn their basic outfit.

If eyes are the windows to the soul, then I am not sure what that makes sunglasses. But I know that they can make or break a great fall outfit.

Anyone will look dashing in a pair of Steve McQueen-approved Persol sunglasses. There are a variety of styles that will fit any face. They are understated, well-made, and classy. A perfect accent, even with the hefty $200+ price tag.

And if those shades don’t strike your fancy, Rayban’s newly-released, modern take on the wayfarers, the Meteor ($145), are sure to make a mark.

Men can pick and choose from a variety of other things to customize their canvas. A J. Campbell belt ($58), minimalistic Braun wristwatch ($85), and brightly colored Hlsaka wallet are all great ways to stand out.

Other options for women include Olivia Harris handbags ($145+), button-cuffed or fingerless gloves, and a personalized set of leggings or stockings.

Don’t be discouraged by the flood of fall fashion you’ll run into at the mall and by designer labels. You can develop your own unique style, starting basic and layering personal accents.
