Emmy predictions

I should say right out of the gate: I'm not happy with how the Emmy nominations turned out this year. So many great shows were snubbed and so many undeserving shows have been put in the limelight. But that's just how the cookie crumbles. The Emmy process as a whole is flawed. How else does Glee get 16 nominations? Especially over hilarious shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, and Party Down. On the drama side of the nominations, I'm happy that great shows like Breaking Bad, Dexter, and Mad Men got nods once again, but I'm so saddened that David Simon's Treme got the axe. It happened with Simon's Wire, and it's happening again with Treme, which is very disappointing seeing as how it's critically acclaimed and regarded as one of the best new shows on television. Despite the snubs, there are plenty of worthy nominations this year. In anticipation of the awards on Sunday, here's a look at what should win and predictions of what I think will win.

Best Supporting Actress For a Comedy Series:

Nominations:

Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester – Glee

Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy – Modern Family

Sofia Vergara as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett – Modern Family

Kristen Wiig as Various Characters – Saturday Night Live

Jane Krakowski as Jenna Maroney – 30 Rock

Holland Taylor as Evelyn Harper - Two And A Half Men

There are a lot of terrific nominees in this category. Even though I hate Glee, I love Jane Lynch, and find her to be hilarious. Modern Family has a plethora of talent and both Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen are fully deserving of an Emmy. Holland Taylor is a terrific actress, it's just that she's on an unfunny show. I must say as much as I get sick of the 30 Rock hype, Jane Krakowski is well deserving of her first ever nomination. Her story line this past season with dating the celebrity look-a-like that looked just like her was pure hilarity. However, none of these women hold a candle to Kristen Wiig, who I believe to be one of the funniest women to have ever been on Saturday Night Live. She can play a huge variety of characters and never fails to make me laugh. Though, once again, I think the Emmys will snub her. There is just too much hype this year for Modern Family, and one of those two women will come away with the award.

Who should win: Kristen Wiig as Various Characters

Who will win: Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy

Best Supporting Actress For a Drama Series:

Nominations:

Sharon Gless as Medeline Westen – Burn Notice

Rose Byrne as Ellen Parsons – Damages

Archie Panjabi as Kalinda Sharma – The Good Wife

Christine Baranski as Diane Lockhart – The Good Wife

Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris – Mad Men

Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson – Mad Men

I clearly need to start watching The Good Wife. It's received 9 nominations for just its first season. Regardless, most shows don't win too much their first season, and these two ladies have some tough competition this year. Sharon Gless has been winning Emmys since before I was born for Cagney & Lacey and would be well deserving of winning again, but I just don't think Burn Notice had enough campaigning to push her in to the winner's circle. Rose Byrne has been nominated for her second straight year, and while I don't watch Damages, the Emmy voters do. Don't be surprised if she walks away with the Emmy this year. I was very happy to see Christina Hendricks get a nod for her role as Joan in Mad Men. This nomination is long overdue. Unfortunately, it is her first year nominated, and it's rare to see someone winning after his or her first nomination. Elisabeth Moss is my pick to take it down this year. She's just simply the best actress out of all these women and Peggy Olson is one of the greatest characters on television right now. She was nominated last year, and the second nomination will be the one that earns her the crown.
