Every Friday night, at Denver's very own Esquire Theater, people fill the house to see films you've most likely never heard of. They come dressed in costumes, wielding random projectiles to throw at the screen. Responsible for this enthusiastic behavior is a new fad in the entertainment industry: movies so bad they're good.
In 2003, a movie called The Room ushered in a new phenomenon of ironic movie-watching. It was a film independently financed by a man named Tommy Wiseau, who produced, wrote, directed, and starred in the film.
The buzz surrounding The Room started to garner national attention and celebrity endorsements from big stars such as Kristen Bell, David Cross and Paul Rudd. During an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmell Show, Bell endorsed the film, saying, "It is like no experience you will ever have."
The narrow appreciation of the film quickly escalated to a fever pitch, resulting in DVD sales skyrocketing and the film getting limited releases in theaters across the country.
The fans arrived in hordes at these screenings, embracing the ridiculousness of it all by yelling their favorite quotes along with the actors on screen. Several other films have accidentally stumbled upon similar success. Just recently, a film aptly named Best Worst Movie was released. The film documents the success of a film called Troll 2, which came out in 1990 and follows one of the young actors in the film who is now a successful dentist, juggling his profession with small-time film notoriety.
Other like-minded films such as Birdemic: Shock and Terror and Human Centipede have gained national attention as well. Birdemic, apparently in an attempt to re-imagine Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds is a film about birds causing the end of the world, while Human Centipede focuses on a psychotic surgeon who sews his victims ass–to-mouth, creating a "human centipede".
At the most basic level, fans of these films simply love to laugh at the bad acting, the poor cinematography, and the unbelievable dialogue. But in the end, who has the last laugh? Ironically, Wiseau and his actors have managed to parlay their surprising success into more film and television opportunities. God bless America.
