Superheroes, sippy cups, and skating sum up Beauty Bar’s most recent installation of its monthly event Down and Derby.
Every third Friday of the month, Beauty Bar sponsors a themed roller skating night at the EXDO Event Center. To mark its one-year anniversary on Sept. 21, the theme was superheroes and super villains.
Sexy and stripped down wonder women, supermen, batmen, and a range of Marvel and DC classic characters paraded around the roller rink. And seemingly, the only thing guests loved to do more than skate was skate and drink simultaneously.
Some childhood favorites like Inspector Gadget, Sherlock Holmes, and the White Power Ranger graced the rink as well as some more creative costumes like Captain Colorado—a man with a Colorado flag draped over his shoulders and a matching trucker hat.
Upon entry, all guests sign a safety waiver noting the inherent risks of strapping on a pair of skates and getting boozed up. After signing the digital waiver, the party begins.
To minimize clean-up and add even more quirk to the night, bartenders serve all drinks in plastic sippy cups. Skaters take a fall and jump back into the groove without spilling their drinks.
Down and Derby is sprinkled with mini-events like couples skate, reverse skate, and contests like the trio skate.
For the trio skate, three people link arms and skate together. Then, on the DJ’s cue, turn around and skate in the opposite direction without breaking their chain. Contest winners receive prizes like free drink vouchers at Beauty Bar.
Down and Derby is first and foremost a bash—not everyone has to skate. Guests corral around the bar in the middle of the rink and dance the night away with sippy cups in hand.
With hits like Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” and Michael Jackson’s “Off The Wall” blaring through the sound system, it’s impossible not to shake your tail feathers.
There’s a $10 attendance fee ($5 presale) and $5 skate rental fee (or bring your own) for each Down and Derby. Coming up: In celebration of Halloween, Oct. 19’s derby is going to be a spooky roller disco.
