With the holidays just around the corner, student organizations are preparing for festive events. Every Wednesday, the Asian Student Alliance meets outside the North Classroom café. Lead by Jason Haubenreiser, the organization’s president, ASA is a UC-Denver-based student group that promotes diversity and unity on and off campus, and is open to anyone.

ASA sponsors and participates in many beneficial events. its latest was Relay for Life, which was held Sept. 12 and 13. On its own, the club raised approximately $500 to help spread cancer awareness. For the past two years, ASA has hosted an annual Halloween Bash, a social event that features dancing, food, DJs from Hip Hop Congress, and break-dancers.

For ASA, the Halloween Bash is a big deal. Bertha “Birdie” Moua, one of the Club’s officers, explained during the last meeting that “the Halloween Bash is one of the major fundraisers for our Culture Night event, and without it, we will have to find funds somewhere else.”

Although Haubenreiser proposed eliminating some social events and edging the group toward more community service, the group ultimately decided to go ahead and put on the Halloween Bash again this year.

During its first year, the Halloween Bash brought in 75 to 90 people. Last year, the group had an estimated head count of 150 people—this year Haubenreiser hopes to see at least 200.

ASA is now beginning to advertise for the Halloween Bash that will take place near the end of October. The organization will post flyers all around campus to promote the event. With funding coming from the school, ASA will still need to hold other fundraisers to help pay for the event. Moua mentioned that “with little fundraisers on the side like bake sales and such, we should be all right.”

ASA is not stopping there, however. Members are fully committed to using their own personal money to help with anything they can to make the Halloween Bash run as smoothly as possible. Both Haubenreiser and Moua have high hopes for this event and can’t wait to see it unfold in the weeks to come.
