With school back in session, it’s business as usual for the members of the Student Government Association. After a summer spent reprioritizing, SGA members were ready to address issues that will affect the students of UC-Denver.
As of November 9, UCD students will be required to provide vaccination records to comply with new immunization policies.
However, faculty and staff will be excluded from this new requirement. Some members of the SGA firmly disagreed with this exemption.
“We will be coming up with a resolution to have faculty and staff provide [immunization] records by starting a student petition,” said Tanner Macdonald, SGA vice-president.
But despite the disagreement with the new policy, members of the SGA will be complying with the new requirements.
“As leaders on campus, we need to make sure we’re getting our [immunization records] in as soon as possible,” said Jack Kroll, president of the SGA.
In order to receive an exemption from providing the proper documentation, the SGA indicated that students could receivers waivers based on religious, personal, and medical reasons.
Although the new immunization policies may be a hassle for some UCD students, the budget increase for student-run organizations hopefully will not.
According to the SGA Finance and Funding Board, the annual budget for student-run organizations will now be $68,000—a 41 percent increase from last year. Each organization on campus will receive $2,800 annually in order to promote their association and recruit more students who may be interested in joining.
The SGA aims to encourage student-run organizations to have more events on campus with this funding increase.
In order to ensure that student-run organizations will be utilizing additional funds for on-campus events, the SGA has decided that only $1,000 of their annual budget can be utilized for off-campus events.
In addition, the finance board reported that the SGA budget this year will include $43,000 for events—$1,600 of which has already been spent, not including their summer retreat—and $101,185 designated for SGA wages.
Beginning with the Student Involvement Fair, which will be held on August 20, the SGA’s goal this year is to organize more student events on campus in an effort to acclimate UCD students—new and seasoned—to the campus and the bodies that inhabit it.
