Students have decided to make a big statement about state higher education funding with little pieces of string. Let’s hope the state legislators have their glasses on.

Although the student march for higher education is not until March 3, student governments at Auraria are already working to spread awareness for the cause.

“We need to unite the campuses,” said UC Denver Student Government Association legislative chair Cynthia Negron. “We need to make sure students know what to do and how to get involved concerning the budget cuts.”

Friday, Jan. 23, student representatives from Metro, CCD, and UCD met to make wristbands for the demonstration. The red elastic wristbands will be distributed across the campus prior to the march.

“I don’t know why the wristbands are colored red,” said Metro student Gary Leffman. “We chose red because it’s what they used in California for a similar cause. And they were successful.”

The topic of budget cuts has been on the SGA agenda since the beginning of the semester. Since federal stimulus money is projected to run out by 2011 and higher education has regularly been on the cutting block for state funds, the SGA has been working further to organize students by collecting contacts throughout the schools.

“Rallies are a great way to get students to come to us,” said Negron during a legislative committee meeting. “But it is not the way we get answers.”
