“Going green” isn’t a fad that will go away any time soon. Ideally, it’s a way of life that could be a permanent part of our world. And in an effort to educate the community on sustainable living, the EarthWorks Expo will be coming to Denver to promote renewable energy, resource conservation, and earth-friendly products—solar panels and light bulbs that cut down on energy.

The Expo will be held at the Denver Merchandise Mart on August 22 and 23.

Organized exclusively by local citizens, the Expo is composed entirely of locally based exhibitors and presenters who help educate Coloradans on how to make the state sustainable—and green.

There will be exhibits, speakers, and workshops that will be aimed at informing attendees about ways to go green. In addition, there will be special programs to educate and entertain kids on the importance of sustainable energy.

Several of the workshops will be interactive. Some of the workshops that will be included are “The Affordable Zero Carbon Home” and “What is Your Carbon Footprint?” These workshops are aimed at educating audience members about how much everyday tasks—driving, for example—can affect the environment.

The Expo will also have coverage of hybrid cars and sustainable agriculture.

Some of the exhibitors that are scheduled to appear are locally owned businesses: 3R Roofing, which specializes in solar solutions; Colorado KVAR, which reduces electrical usage; and Lightly Treading Inc., which makes safer and more energy-efficient homes.

For the kids, there is the EarthKIDS area, offering live animals from the Denver Zoo for children to pet. The kid’s area will also include hands-on games and activities that teach youngsters about “going green” as well as how to take care of the environment.

If that isn’t enough to keep the children busy, the Butterfly Pavilion is bringing the “Big Bugs!” exhibit, which showcases a tarantula and the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach.

But if you’re too squeamish for the bugs, or get greened out, there is free music from the likes of Jack Hadley and Jennifer Friedman.

The Expo has something for everyone.

EarthWorks Expo 2009 will be held at the Denver Merchandise Mart (451 E. 58th Avenue) on August 22 from 10 a.m.—7 p.m. and August 23 from 10 a.m.—5 p.m. Ticket prices are: Adult 1-day admission: $5 ages 21–64, Adult 2-day admission: $9, Senior 1-day admission: $3 ages 65 and up, Senior 2-day admission: $5, Youth 1-day admission: $3 ages 13-20, and Youth 2-day admission: $5.
