Many children were busy this Halloween traveling to neighboring houses getting candy dumped in their bags.
UC Denver has also been handed a few treats, though nothing with chocolate or caramel; the university was awarded $52 million, courtesy of the National Institute of Health.
“We have gotten around 570 awards and 12 challenge grants,” said Richard Traystman, Ph.D., professor and vice chancellor of research at UCD. “This is all coming from the stimulus funds from the current administration.”
After coming into office, President Obama designated $10.5 billion to be allocated for education by the beginning of 2010, and required that the amount be spent by the end of the same year.
“We’ve really done quite well,” Traystman said.
The money is necessary to provide new jobs and to maintain old ones, he explained. And more grants might be on their way from the NIH—the Institute isn’t finished allocating all the money yet.
“Almost all of the [$52 million] has been awarded to the Anschutz campus,” said Traystman.
“Anytime you bring in money, it’s going to be crucial.”
