Four simple steps to relating to a feminist

If you think all feminists are man-hating boner-killers, you've probably pissed off a few in your time. But the thing is, they're not. In the spirit of Women's History Month, here are a few tips to avoid the rage of your entire women's studies class. Or, you know, anyone who supports gender equality.

Don't use the term "feminazi."

Equating a human rights movement with fascist crazies who wanted to take over the world and kill off an entire race is not only inaccurate, but totally offensive. If you want to steer clear of pissing off the feminists in your life, don't compare them to the Third Reich.

Understand that women can be sexist, too.

Just like men can be feminists, women can be misogynists. One of the arguments people who don't understand feminism always make when something is sexist is that, since a woman was involved, it can't possibly be anti-lady. Not true. Women, just like men, can purport sexist stereotypes and hate speech.

Don't insist that feminism is no longer necessary.

Yeah, we've come a long way since suffrage. But just because conditions for women are better doesn't mean they're completely fixed. A country where one in six women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime and only 96 of the 439 representatives in Congress are women is not an equal place.

Realize that feminist does not equal lesbian.

Lesbians can be feminist, but not all feminists are lesbians. Feminism is not about getting rid of men, but about getting equality for both sexes. No matter what gender you take to bed.
