Sometimes it just happens. You're in a hurry, you don't have a lot of money, and you are hungry. The Tivoli Student Union food court may be one of the only spots for quick dining on campus, and if you're looking for the healthy side of the fast food industry, life can get a little tough. So if you're in need of a fix, here are a few items to try from any of our own delicious fast food eateries at the Tiv.
If you're feeling some American standard "Mexican" and stop into Taco Bell, you might be looking at a number eight, which offers three crunchy tacos and a drink. While this looks delicious, according to Zach Carpenter, a server at Taco Bell, choosing the fresco combo is your best bet for health. This steak taco combo can be made crunchy or soft. "The difference is that we take off all of the dairy and add some pico de gallo," said Carpenter. This choice would cut your calories by about 300 and fat by eight grams.
Next in line is McDonald's, a popular place if the lines are any representation. If you are stopping in here for a quick to-go snack, choose a grilled chipotle BBQ snack wrap rather than the Quarter Pounder, according to Gilberto Ortiz, manager of the Tivoli McDonald's. This choice cuts about 120 calories and four grams of fat.
If you're in the mood for some Japanese action, there's Wok n Roll. The beef yakitori bowl is not the way to go, according to George Garcia, a server. Instead, choose the teriyaki chicken bowl with brown rice. "That's the healthiest thing on our menu," said Garcia.
If you are looking for something light there, a miso soup is also a good choice. The difference in calories for the two bowls is around 120 calories and 10 grams' difference in fat.
Finally, we have Subway. "I really don't think we have an unhealthy option," said server John Crow. "I guess if people weren't working out or trying to gain the weight, the Philly cheesesteak double wouldn't be good." Instead, Crow said he advises going for the veggie delight sandwich. The difference between these sandwiches in 6" size is 290 calories and 15 grams of fat.
So if you're in a hurry and need a quick lunch, these may be a few options for you to really enjoy the flavor without ruining an otherwise healthy day.
