The words that come to mind when discussing Dinosaur Jr.—epic, timeless, consistent—are all formfitting for this alt rock trio.
Dinosaur Jr. is a band that has been making music for almost two decades, so one could hardly call them new. One of the best things about Dinosaur Jr. is also its worst: In 18 years, its sound has not changed.
J. Mascis is responsible for the haunting vocals that have become the most memorable sound of Dinosaur Jr. This is immediately clear after hearing the first song, “Don’t Pretend You Didn’t Know.” It gives a wonderful vision of what the rest of the album is like, amazing vocals and melodic guitar solos.
I Bet On The Sky continues with each song giving a different view of what Dinosaur Jr. is all about. “What Was That” has the sound of early Dinosaur Jr., having all the aspects of guitar distortion and feedback, which has become a staple in the band’s history.
Just as the first song, “Don’t Pretend You Didn’t Know,” sets off the album, the last track, “See It On Your Side,” finishes off the album. The long guitar solos and very few lyrics help give an understanding of closure to the album.
Dinosaur Jr. continues to put out great albums like I Bet On The Sky that are timeless and as wonderful as having a real life dinosaur as a pet.
