Growing up next to the Platte River must have been a hard time in the lives of the members of the Platte River Killers. At least, that’s what it sounds like. Every Stone, the group’s latest release, is a repetitive screaming mess that really gets you wanting to kill something.

The members can play their instruments, but the balance between the guitar chords and the placement of screaming in comparison to singing just isn’t right.

Most of the album doesn’t stick out and several of the tracks are severely lacking in variation. Only one song does deserve the hit of the repeat button: the apocalyptic “TwentyTwelve.” The guitar chords leap up and down as the singer screams and sings. In this song the band finds that balance of melodic rock and metal that the album seems to search for. The song has fast thrashing beats that transition into slow, calming guitar work.

Every Stone is an album full of grinding, screaming metal that tries to also dance in the melodic area of metal that is getting so much attention. It sounds like the band wants to get away from the hardcore scene that’s in Denver and really cross into thrash metal; the transition is there, but not all the way.
