GWAR, a band known for offensive lyrics, naked violence and covering the fans in fake blood and semen, visited the Gothic Theater on Nov. 11. And lived up to that reputation.
The crowd was a sea of young and old people dressed in white, shoving and pushing long before the members of the band took the stage. When the house lights dimmed, a video played on a huge screen for 10 minutes. The video was called Behind The Murder, and was like a history of the GWAR’s bloody 25 years done in Behind The Music fashion. After the video, the members came out in full costume. Lead singer Oderus Urungus looked like a mutilated space alien with a giant fake penis that he stroked throughout the set.
From the first note, the pit erupted into a spinning mass of white, begging for blood to spray. The Gothic was ready for the blood, too, with walls protected by thick black plastic sheets and speakers covered with plastic bags. And it needed protection.
Crazed, costumed characters fought and killed each other and performed disembowelments onstage during songs, spraying the audience, band members, and security with fake blood and feces.
The set also had two guest appearances: weird latex renditions of the resurrected Michael Jackson and President Obama. Jackson came out to perform a song with the members, but before long Urungus ripped off Jackson’s nose, spraying the crowd, again, with blood. Then Jackson’s face was removed, increasing the flow of blood. The carcass was quickly removed as the song ended.
Later, a fake President Obama came by to deliver a medal of honor to the band. Then, the fake chief of state’s head was ripped off. The animated corpse swung around wildly, spewing, you guessed it, blood onto everything. The crowd loved it.
Aside from the crazy antics and Urungus jacking off and spraying green ejaculate onto the audience, the music was well-orchestrated heavy metal. The set included songs from the new album and several old favorites from over the last 25 years. The encore was a killer ending with favorites like “Have You Seen Me?” and “Sick Of You.”
At the end, the crowd of multicolored blood-stained t-shirts screamed and begged for more brutal, bare bottom violence. But there are only so many gallons of fake blood a band can dump on its audience.
