I used to be really close friends with someone who happens to be a prominent figure in the gay rights movement. His Twitter bio even states that he is a gay activist. So, last week, it surprised me when I came across his tweet in my Twitter feed. It read, "Newt asking for an open marriage doesn't show a lack of moral character, it shows he has balls, something a prez SHOULD (metaphorically) have."

After I stopped choking on my orange juice, I thought, "What the fuck? Seriously?" Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but for a gay activist to condone and glorify this type of behavior is downright detestable.

Instead of glorifying the alleged action, this activist should have the "balls" to stand up and fight. Fight to expose politicians like Newt Gingrich for their hypocrisy and discriminative policies. And fight to dissolve the barriers that stand in the way of the gay rights movement.

Here's something to think about. Gingrich has signed on to support the Defense of Marriage Act, with defines marriage as "a legal union between one man and one woman." That means absolutely no same-sex marriages.

For Gingrich to assume a protective role on marriage now is grossly hypocritical on so many levels. Committing adultery in two out of his three marriages is not something to be proud of. Having the "balls" to dissolve those marriages prior to committing adultery would have been much more honorable.

Furthermore, Section 3 of DOMA "codifies an irrecognition of same-sex marriage for all federal purposes." This means same-sex couples can forget about ever having equal marriage rights as straight couples. Under this law, which Gingrich supports, it just won't happen. But these are the "balls" we need running this country?

For a gay activist to brag about this is simply appalling. To this day only six states in the U.S. have been successful in granting the right to marry to same-sex couples, but the federal government still won't recognize it. And here we have a gay activist claiming Gingrich's shameless nerve is ballsy.

This is an insult to the gay community, which has been fighting tooth and nail to win the basic equal rights as everyone else. Shame on you.

Shame on you for using your voice to brag about, and commend the actions of, someone who has vowed to stand against gay rights if elected president. Shame on you for suggesting that this is the mindset we need running this country. Shame on you for not having the "balls" to stand up against this disgusting behavior. And shame on you for using your 140 characters to push the gay rights movement back into the closet.

Unfollow.
